The house belonged to the famous for their philanthropyactivities family of the priest and theologian Spaskyi H. I. and his wife Yuliia Mykolaivna (born Pereiaslavtseva). In 1884, he was ordained a holy priest in Bohorodychna church, which belonged to a charitable institution in Nizhyn. From 1889 and till the end of his life, he was a priest at St. Nickolas Cathedral, and taught God's Law at the education institutions of the city. During Jewish Pogrom, he gave a shelter to a number of Jewish families. Besides, they taught children from the poor village families.
A prominent Ukrainian ethnologist and art critic,SpaskaY.Y. spent her childhood in this house together with a church and public figure of Russian diaspora in France, Spaskyi F. H., and Spaskyi I. H., who was a numismatist, a researcher of Rus monetary system and a custodian of numismatic collection in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. Once I.H. Spaskyi wrote: "What a happiness that the destiny gave us peace at the priest H. Spaskyii house".
