Nizhyn prison was designedby Russian architect AndriianZakharov according to the provisions of the reform adopted at the beginning of the 19th century, establishing in Russian empire a unitary system of provincial management and therefore expansion of the network of public administration institutions.

Nizhyn prison was designed by Russian architect AndriianZakharov according to the provisions of the reform adopted at the beginning of the 19th century, establishing in Russian empire a unitary system of provincial management and therefore expansion of the network of public administration institutions.Nizhyn prison was made of spatial rectangular courtyardsurroundedby a highwallwithwatchtowers on the corners and the appropriate buildings inside the yard. In 1830 UstymKarmaliuk (1787 – 1835), folk hero, the leader of the rural rebellion in Podillia against enslavement. During the World War II fascist occupiers executed 150 rural inhabitants of the village ChervoniPartyzany for the help to guerillas in Nizhyn prisonyard (July, 1942). The members of Nizhynunderground organization that was under the leadership of Ya. Batiuk were detained in prison in summer1943. In 2008 on the territory of the former prison there were installed memorials to victims of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 and political repressions.
